The plaintiff, Michael Bowman, appealed the trial court's granting defendant's motion for partial summary judgment, and the defendant, Harold Doherty, cross-appealed the jury's finding of legal malpractice. Michael Bowman was arrested for giving a worthless check on December 27, 1978. He was released on bond and ordered to appear in court on January 15, 1979. Bowman arrived at the initial appearance without an attorney. The judge informed the plaintiff of his right to an attorney and continued the case until January 22, 1979.
